What do you guys do?

How do you guys do it?
I've JUST tried talking to my boyfriend about my eating problems, and told him I think I might be bulimic.
Honestly I want help because I can't STOP eating no matter how bad I know it is. I don't care about not eating, but the constant wanting for food. As much as I hate it, I want it.
So I told my boyfriend about it, for the record, I get depressed sometimes and cut myself, and he knows I do but he always changes the subject and tries avoiding it so I rarely ever talk to him about my problems now, and I wasn't surprised with the response I got.

"I don't understand. You shouldn't have to(binge) if you eat regular meals and don't make yourself throw up."

Good thing I didn't have much expectations on the response.
Have you guys ever told anyone about your problems?
Do they understand?
Is it just my boyfriend, or do many people not understand bulimia? Yet they do anorexia?
Do I have to become skin and bones thin to become noticed and receive help?
Ugh but if I was skinny I wouldn't need the help. I only want help to stop this binging.

What would I do without this blog. I'm so glad there are people out there who understand, I just wish I knew you guys personally :( It would be so much fun to have an actual physical friend to diet with!

  1. Bulimia becomes a cycle of binge and purging because your body craves food. Your mind also becomes hooked on the feeling after a binge- feeling full, giving in to what you want, squashing those feelings with food, and the purging those feelings out until you are empty.

Your desperate to lose weight but your not good at restricting, so you throw up. I understand, I have been there! Try looking into healthier ways to eat and fuel your body....

    1. Thank you for the comment : )

I've been in the cycle of going healthy and fasting to binging, but for now i'll stay positive and try my best to get back on to the healthy side!

  2. Thankfully, I have not yet had such an experience, but this kind of thing is one of the reasons I dread telling people. What if they think it's stupid? What if they think I should be able to stop at the drop of a hat?
I hope you can explain to him what it's like having bulimia. Ask him for his support and tell him what kinds of things he can do to help. Tell him just how hard it is to deal with and let him know that if he has a problem you will help him through it too.
I think anorexia is easier to understand because it's so much more visible. Movies about EDs usually feature anorexia, textbooks spend more time on it, the media spends more time on it because skeletal people make for better news stories. Also I think there's the gross out factor because if you're anorexic people think you just don't eat. If you're bulimia what comes to mind is usually making yourself throw up (even though that's not always how people do it). The image of the former is easier to accept.
    What do you think?

    1. I always love your replies! You are really good with words : )

I guess now that ive yearned for help, I can't say I didn't ask for it!
I wish it was easy explaining it to him, but like I said, from past conversations with him we've had, I know he's just going to keep it simple and just tell me 'Not to do it.' And since we're doing long distance, there's not much he could do :(

That's true. Even I used to think making yourself throw up was crazy. haha Things can change so much in life!

  3. I think its society in general. I am overweight but have Bulimia. I haven't ever got help purely because I think people won't take me seriously because I am not skin and bones....

  4. Eating disorders are so misunderstood
There are so many myths out there
The number one offender being that you have to be underweight to have an eating disorder
But the reality is that only a small percentage of people ever reach a state of emaciation
Eating disorders come in all shapes and sizes, from emaciated to obese and everything in between
It is a sad reality though that we are not taken seriously until we are very ill

Your boyfriend probably doesn't understand your bulimia
Maybe it would help to explain to him what exactly it is
Then it mightn't be such a touchy subject for him if he understands it a bit better

    Good luck x

    1. It's pretty much like someone being stalked. They ask help from the police, they don't think it's a big deal so they don't do much about it. They only wait till some serious damage is done. Or death.

Yeah. I felt ashamed explaining it myself, so I asked him to look it up :/

Thank you for the comment :)

  5. I struggle with bulimia as well- my husband refused to go to therapy with me. It was horrible. Some people just can't get their minds around it. It takes one to know one!
